Sonicvania dev log 2.5

I have been talking about games and I have not talked about my game. I should do that, huh? This will be a SonicVania gamedev log where I will show off my game, changes, and features I got in store. Can’t show everything but show enough where you can see some progress.

So in SonicVania, I had plans to make this a simple metrovania but with Sonic. It was an idea I had and this idea got going when I played Ponyvania by ZiggyLung a few years ago. I wanted to make this a thing, and so I got to work and took the base of my old game which was a sonic boss rush. And I got to work.

I got plans for the boss rush game to have an effect in Sonicvania as a bonus. But I will show off what was added, and talk about the changes and features that are in the game.

Sonic at the start was going to have the spin dash, homing attack, jumping, and maybe a boost. But then my friend, link asked how will it play which translated to “Does Sonic have a weapon?” after a while, I did not have a weapon for him nor did I want to make one but after a while, a weapon for sonic might be good for the game.

And so, here is Sonic’s weapon, the ring.

deal true damage, ignoring defense.

The ring will have different forms. The gold ring will circle him and if any enemies touch the ring, they will take true damage meaning the ring deals raw damage, ignoring enemy defense. The ring can not receive buffs and this ring gets stronger after killing bosses.

Sonic has a new action. While airborne, hitting jump again will put Sonic in a power-up state where red sparkles will spin around him. But this may become Sonic’s new instabuff or instashield which allows you to avoid damage if timed right.

You can upgrade Sonic and his new friends in these shops. Here you can enhance a weapon or even your character to do more damage or be able to take more damage. Some areas to upgrade are shops or special characters.

In this realm, red rings are used for everything. Upgrading, buying items or something special that is later on. These red rings are magical and they do not act as means to survive hits like the gold rings. You can find red rings by killing monsters or bosses.

And death, and how I will handle it in Sonicvania. I thought about it and it will be like most metrovania games, you die, and you return to the title screen. You can save progress, so if you die, you don’t have to start all over.

I thought about adding a three-death feature where if you died three times then you would be dead afterwards. I may still make this an item in the future but I don’t know yet. It could be busted or fun. I want Death to be meaningful since this Sonic fan game is not of the normal style. If you could respawn or have 99 lives, that would make death in the game pointless.

Super forms. This is something I have messed around with. I don’t know if I would call them super forms but form ability. Since rings are meant to be currency instead of being used as a buffer when you take damage or used to keep you alive.

Sonic’s power up state.

I have an idea for this. You can use energy from defeated enemies to activate your forms when you have enough, it will drain slowly but of course, you can still take damage when you are in a power-up form.

Next up is saving progress

How I plan on doing this by using INI++. There it will store the player’s values for progress and whatnot. It will be encoded data so players can’t edit it. And I got a lot of value to store. Buffs and debuffs will not be saved to ini as they are temporary values

I just want to say this will be done when I have more to show off.

Sonic Boss rush ideas

I want to finish up this game as I don’t feel right leaving it incomplete and some bugs need to be fixed. I want to add new phases to the fight to make it feel complete and add in much more so some of the stuff can carry over to Sonicvania.

There is more I would talk about but the rest are still in idea form and have not worked on them. But these are things I made or have begun working on. I will have beta testers for this game once the demo drops. :3
