I had this post on hold for way too long. Let’s fix that right now. I am very late to the party but let’s not delay any longer. This won’t be a review since this is still a demo and everything may be subject to change. It will be my thoughts on the game.
Jun 11 – 2019 – patched version.
So. since this is a patch fix. Here it will be hard to talk about this version since there are minor changes and bug fixes. I will brings those up later with the new bugs I found or any other bugs.
The patched version does a good job addressing the problems I found. Minor as they may be, they can pile up later and be a mess. I’m happy that Club Nicole now has springs for the players who pick Sonic and fall into the pit. They can get out without dying.
Another change I’m happy about is that hitting exit in the pause menu will no longer close the game like before. But for the full game. It should send you to the title screen or hub world. I don’t know how this game will play, in terms of levels but food for thought.
So the minecarts. Before this patched version. You could use your moves to go backwards to get off the track or to go back when you are not allowed to do that. That has been fixed in this version. You can only jump.
There are other things like graphic bug fix
And the game crashing bug where if your time bonus is 250. The game freezes on 50. But this bug was fixed in the new build. Overall, this was a pretty fast patch for the game and it was done well. As far as I seen, there are no game crashing bugs.
Now for the bugs I found.
#1 taking damage and falling onto a spring while in your hurt animation will end your I-frames
By doing this, you can take another hit which may kill you or take another hit.
But other then this. I don’t see anymore bugs. Sorry for the long overdue post. I have been busy with other things. :V But here it is.
Hope you enjoy the post and keep up the great work
Today. I will be looking at Kyle & Lucy: Wonderworld.
Story: Lucy & Kyle went to go watch the shooting stars from the great ruins, as they have a better view from there. The lad, Kyle heard of unknown legends of the ruins till now he may believe they are true. A bright light catches the attention of Kyle and Lucy.
Making Lucy reach for the odd light while doing so. She was able to reach over the mountains that were far away, telling Kyle this, he wants to see as well, causing them to fall over and lose her balance by reaching too far. Kyle tried to save her but ended up getting dragged down with her into a new world.
The game is pretty nice. It feels like a Sonic game but the music gives off a Freedom Planet vibe, that’s not a bad thing. It feel great to play the game, and while the game only has 3 stages, it does theme quite well and gives the player a lot to do and explore.
Your tutorial level is Limestone Lagoon. This stage will help you understand the moveset, wall jump and wall dash to water physics, and normal enemies, and hazards. If you explore well, you will even find secrets hidden in the area. This is the first stage you get to play when you start the demo. Can’t miss it.
There is a hub world, akin to Sonic advance 3’s hub but much better in Kyle and Lucy: WonderWorld. This hub world houses the final two stages. Mystic Garden is your hub world.
Mystic Garden 1 is your first real level that will put what learned to the test. Explore well. Be sure to check high and low for the green orb. This is a pretty fun stage to play. I had fun playing it.
Robot Roundup is a mission based stage where you need to find 8 robots. But no worries. You get a hint system. The closer you are to the enemy the “!” will go from Green to red. Red meaning you are close to the target. And Green meaning you are far from it.
I should also bring up. When you make a save file, you can play as Kyle or Lucy when loading the save.
Lucy has a double jump that is useful. And Kyle has features that remind me of Sonic but he has somewhat of a forward dash to gain speed. While there are no lives, there is a health bar, take 4 hits and you are done.
Welcome to the end
Kyle and Lucy: Wonderworld is a fun demo that is worth playing. It has a lot of promise and this game can turn into something wonderful. The game looks and feels great. The music is amazing, it’s like a mix of Freedom planet/Sonic/Ristar. I wish the team the best of luck, and I hope to see the game at the next sage
Time to go over Sonic Adventure SX for SAGE2018. I know I am late to the party, but I want to share my thoughts, since I did review this game before, but under a different name “Sonic and Shantae Adventure (SAGE 2017) Demo”
So, in this demo I will list the new stuff.
Time attack or Trial mode
Mini game mode
Story mode, Battle mode are not in this demo.
Made by Giga
When opening the game, you will be met with a new title screen and and save / load screen which is fancy.
From what I have played, It has got a huge overhaul and I will be talking about what I like in this demo and dislike as well.
Able to play as 8 characters (Not counting Super, hyper, and dark form)
Each Character feels different, and not a sonic clone
Level layout is much better than the last build
4 stages total to play in. 2 for each side. 2 for Sonic, and 2 for Shantae
Pretty good Music
Fun to play.
Issues I had with the last version has been fixed
Mini games are a fun time killer for a bit
The camera for any sonic Character always jerks around when you are going at max speed when going in loops
Playing as Shantae or RottyTops. When hit or takes damage on ground or in air, the player freezes up in place and can’t move for a bit. This can be a issue when you are over pits or other hazards. This can lead to unfair deaths
Spindash is not strong enough, unless you also move in the spindash state
Rottytops can clip through walls when ducking on the left side of them
RottyTops can zip along the wall
Shantae’s dash backwards allows her to clip in walls to skip areas
When getting hit in the air or ground, you’re stunned and this can lead to cheap deaths
Sometimes risky’s scimitar doesn’t hurt enemies and you take a free hit
Tails feels heavy when he is flying
Collision needs some more work
It is far better then the last year’s build. It has love put into this fan game and I would love to see this completed. It needs more work but Giga6152, you did well here and it will get better overtime
I had fun playing this. It no longer as rough as the last version. There is a amazing game here, and with a bit more fine tuning I think this would be a fun crossover game.
Keep up the good work, Giga6152. I’m proud of what I see here. :3
So, I want to give my two cents on this “fan game”, and all the heat, and controversy, that it is getting has been earned.
So the question here is…
Q: What is Sonic Gather Battle?
Sonic Gather Battle or SGB, for short, is a Sonic Battle / Smash brothers clone, It’s a 2D fighting game in Simple terms. You can play as Sonic, Mario, Megaman. This is a crossover “fan game” akin to “Super Smash flash”
But from what I seen. It plays like a action adventure fighting game. A mixed of the two game styles.
So, now that you got a idea of what type of game this is, I can bring you the info, to why this “fan game” has got a lot of heat.
This “game” has come underfire for adding an “DRM” to it, to keep players from cheating online or in single player.
But the real reason is to protect “custom sprites edits” from being “stolen” from this “fan game” That is a awful reason to add DRM.. Sonic Mania had DRM, and that went poorly. And Sonic 2 HD (No, not the 2017 build / demo) that LOst worked on. That tire fire went downhill, seems people don’t learn…
Sonic Gather Battle DRM is a virus or Trojan.
One, this fan game will try to attempt to give itself administrative-level privileges. The fact that this “fan game” has the nerve to try to give itself administrative-level privileges is down right sick.
A fan game or a game SHOULD never need administrative-level privileges in anyway. If, a game needs administrative-level privileges, it means trouble.
What does this Sonic Gather Battle DRM do?
The DRM will look for the the keyword “cheating” or “cheat” and kill the windows with those keywords. “Doesn’t sound so bad” But jimmy, it gets worst. how it knows what you are using. It is spying or rather, watching what it being used on your computer..
Looking up Sonic Gather battle cheat or cheats will kill your browser, It has been noted that the game has access to your web browser
“Ok, that sounds bad but–” BUT JIMMY…..
IT GETS WORST.
If, you happen to use cheat engine while the game is running, the game will freeze or crash, needing to restart. Upon starting up a level, the USA Sonic CD boss theme will be playing while the background will be red with red eyes showing up and watching, followed up by the game spawning ghosts that can’t be killed. Making a dead game.
BUT IT gets MUCH WORST.
Your IP via (“what is my IP?”) is sent to the game dev to be blacklisted, and when I said that the game knows what you are using, it checks to see what you have done in your browser. All of this is illegal, for a fan game. AGAIN, ALL OF THIS WAS DONE TO PROTECT CUSTOM SPRITE EDITS
From what I seen in comments, Having the game installed, and not cheating won’t keep you safe. I believe your IP is whitelisted but the DRM for this game is doing some weird shit in the background.
I heard that uninstalling the game, makes things worst. I don’t know how true that is… But I am not going to question it. And there is so much more I have not even covered yet.
After this has blewup, and word of mouth, spread like wildfire. The wildfire being controversy. Leemena has went into hiding, disabling Negative comments that mention the game is a virus (Which is true). I can’t feel sorry for them. This was not a mistake or a error. This was a choice that They made to add this DRM into a fangame, just to protect custom sprite edits…
They have been banned from SAGE, I seen somewhere that it was mentioned.
As a Indie game dev in training, this makes me sick for a few reasons.
1 is Sega. The reason why they are ok with fans making fangames is that they know fans will make shitty fans games or good fan games or even great fans. They know that their fanbase is loud and toxic but they have enough trust in fans to know they won’t pull shady stuff like this.
Granted, Malware in Sonic Fan games has happened once. But if, this happens again or more then once, sega may crackdown on fangames, if they start having malware, spyware or other shit.
2 If, you are a streamer, youtuber, reviewer, speedrunner, this doesn’t have any impact on you. It’s where the indie game devs or indie devs who are new, get the shit end of the stick. When people like, Leemena do shit like this. The good side of the community gets dragged through the mud. Each Negative thing will build up.
We want people to like indie devs, not hate them. We want to give people entertainment to love, not to hate. We want to have people to trust us, not question if we can be trusted. Look. Word of mouth spread fast, we don’t need people trying to steal info or give users virus. I have plans on being a indie dev and trusted. But if, things like this keep happening every now and then, I will have my doubts.
“those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it”
When the very first version of Sonic 2 HD (2012), there were reports of a keylogger within Sonic 2 HD (2012 version) BUT later was found the cause of the false reports, it was bad coding practices. Sadly, due to word of mouth spreading so fast, there was no way to get the truth out there fast enough
With Sonic Gather Battle, This was, again, a choice that Leemena made to add this DRM to this “fangame” to protect “custom sprite edits” from being ripped or “stolen”
This makes me not trust Leemena or Dan, and I never met them but UGH. I will be linking sources and videos that have more information.
If you find “Sonic Gather Battle” fangame, DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS Game/virus.
Update: Leemena has deactivated their Deviantart account
Update 2: I hear this is his other account, not sure.
Where do I begin with this one… I have played bad fan games before, but damn, this one takes the cake. But let’s get into this “gem” of a game.
Before you can play, the game will give you the option to use a control or a keyboard. It would be best to use. It is a control layout, so it does not matter what you pick.
When you first start the game, you are dropped into the level, No cutscene, just an action stage. This stage is called “Emerald Garden” It uses level pieces from the advance series.
This opening stage is all over the place, there are pits in some annoying areas, the level layout is not too bad… but zone two is very questionable. But I’m jumping the gun. For sonic, he has light blue rings as a means to use his light speed dash.
I also want to talk about sonic, in this game, he feels heavy when he jumps, his momentum feels akin to Sonic 4 momentum, if you roll while holding right or left, you gain momentum, maybe, too much. This feels awkward to get used to it.
The more I play it, the more the physics and momentum give off a Sonic 4: EP 1 vibe. It really does remind me of that game, it’s not a bad thing mind you, It feels off.
I got off track again. So, let’s see. Emerald Garden has some questionable enemy placement. Or rather, the game has very questionable enemy placement, at times is unfair. You have to take your time, should you go fast, you will end up falling into a pit or running into an enemy with almost no time to react.
But the emerald garden stage is a fairly easy level if you ignore the pits. It’s a standard platformer stage. After beating Emerald Garden, you are off to fight Eggman, this boss fight is based on the Sonic Advance 2’s, “Leaf forest” boss.
But after beating the boss, you are warped to Scuttle Town, (Yes, from Shantae), where you get a cutscene that is pretty much a plot dump. Eggman and Risky boots have teamed up and you must stop them.
Here is the main hub world for this game, After beating Emerald garden zone, which is a level and a boss. Sonic gets one more zone, for the demo to play in. And boy, this next stage for Sonic is.. I really don’t like it.
The level select hub room is based on Sonic Advance 3, where, if you complete a zone, you can come back to it later, and play it again.
Now, to get into the second zone… I can understand why Lake Feperd, said this was the worst fan game from sage2017 on his twitter.
So, zone 2 is a fire-based level, or rather, going for a fire theme for the zone.
Lava Filter… Man, this stage is ugh. Enemy placement is awful here. If you are new here, using the dash booster will boost you into an enemy. There are pits here. too many pits that make this a marble-like level.
You can go fast, but you will be punished, with cheap enemy placement and cheap deaths. You need to go slow, so you can avoid cheap deaths and cheap potshots.
Overall, this is not a fun stage, it needs work, a lot of work. I can say, without a doubt, that I truly hate this stage with a passion.
But, should you manage to beat the stage, then the final boss for Sonic, is Sky. And this boss is so easy, that it is sad. Deal with a “Hard” level, only to fight an easy boss. UGH!!!!
I know, I’m being a bit mean but, you need to be this way for games. This way, they will know what to fix or improve.
After beating Sky, You get a cutscene between the two.
Then Sonic story ends with him, talking to Knuckles and Tails, which follows up with Sonic meeting Shantae again and meeting Amy
Just DAMN. Now for Shantae.
If you played the Shantae series, you know she has a Hairwhip attack and magic powers and items. The game gets most of that right, for the most part.
Scuttle Town is our first and only level for Shantae. It’s your normal platformer stage and yes, there are pits but here, they are not too bad, it’s a good thing.
Scuttle Town, you just go right and do some platforming here or there. There is a part where you need to fall down to get to the next area.
After making your way through, you get a cutscene with Sky and Bolo, as they let you know that risky boots, is up ahead. You have a cutscene with Risky Boots, seen below.
The Sonic Vs Sky fight is the same, but Risky Boots has two patterns. Run to the left or right, or jump to the left or right. That’s it. She only has touch damage as an attack and this fight is so boring.
Once Risky boots is beaten, You get a cutscene that ends Shantae part of the demo.
I am not going to bother, playing this game any longer than I need to. Going to give my thoughts on this demo, what I liked and didn’t like.
What I liked
Most the sprite animation looks nice
I like the concept, of a crossover happening
The story needs work but could be good.
What I didn’t like and bugs
This game has too many pits
Enemy placement needs work
The homing attack is broken and need to be fixed
The Lightspeed dash rings, also need work. Pressing the action in the middle of the rings will send sonic backward
Homing attack on a spring kills momentum
Sprites tend to be off the ground or not align well
When Shantae attack in the air, she does not attack but loses momentum for a second
In Lava Filter, if you skip the level trigger (By jumping over it), that takes you to the other half of the stage, the game hard locks.
In short, this game left a bad first impression, I went in knowing what I was getting myself into, but, wow. I did not plan for this, in any way. There are some good ideas here, but there is a lot of coal, burying the diamonds and there is a lot that needs to be done.
The game goes for a Sonic advance style but the physics and momentum for Sonic feel close, to that of Sonic 4’s physics and momentum. It just needs work, is this the worst fan game? No, but it’s pretty close.
If you are making games like this, it’s best to have a team of testers to find what does or doesn’t work. So this way, you will know what needs to be fixed and improved on.
But I am done with this game. There are other characters like Sky, Knuckles, Amy. Only Tails, and Bolo are unplayable, at the moment. I like the ideas here, but they need work and time. I don’t know what game engine, that giga6152 used to make this game. But with a little work, time and effort, this could be a fun fan game.
Hello there, I am Sonik, but you know that by now. It’s that time again. The Sonic Amateur Gaming Expo or SAGE, for short. Where Sonic game devs or indie game devs show off their skills by making a game for SAGE.
As the Title says, I will be looking at Sonic ages and give my thoughts on it and what it did right, wrong and such.
So Sonic Ages, a Sonic fan game made in Unity engine and it does offer Xbox360 / controller support. Be warned, the game will be loud when you open it.
