So, I have been running this through, my head for a while now, as I work on game stuff in click team fusion. I have been waiting to think of some modes for my fan game.
This is going to be a rather short post, but it will serve as a base for rules, and I don’t want to get to a point where adding in these modes would need a lot of more work done.
I have plans on, letting my friends create these modes for the game.
Here is what needs to be done, a list of sorts.
If you want to help, follow the list below
1 | Name your mode, levels, and bosses
2 | Give some info on what’s in the mode
| How hard is it? And etc. Is it easy? Let me know. Should there be checkpoints or no?
3 | stages layout
Tell me what type of design you want for the mode, or give me an idea or a level reference, or make one yourself for me to use. Note, there is no stage or limit, but know it will take longer.
You may also add in item pick up, and other things. Even stage music
4 | Bosses
You have to tell me, what do you want me to add for bosses? You need to make the sprites, and, if you can’t make them, you can recolor, if you wish. If you made bosses sprites, just save them somewhere or copy to an image saving site, like, Twitter, etc.
What are their attacks? Do they have a second phase? What is their attack pattern? Let me know.
5 | enemies
Same for bosses, recolor an enemy, you like, for the mode. Note: If you have no new enemy sprites, ones that are already in the game will be used as a placeholder, till you make your own.
6 | Reward for being the mode
What will the player get for beating your custom mode? A “Thank you” from you? A new mode? Feel free to add that in your Pastebin or twitpost.
7 | On death or Game over
Tell me what should happen.
While there is no deadline, as of yet, I have a lot of work to do. I like to think and plan ahead.
8 | Anything extra you add, I will look at and let you know if it stays or goes
To submit your idea, use Pastebin to list the ideas.
Do keep in mind, once things change, you may need to alter some things.
I do ask that you do try your best to fill in everything. If you need to color something, get Paint.net. If you half-ass things, you will be skipped.
But, if you care, I may call on you for future projects. But that is it. Thanks for reading. :3
So, it’s time that I revisit, Sonic Mania, and give my new thoughts on this game. As you know, Sonic Mania is praised as “the best Sonic game.”, and, the like and such.
It has been a month, since I reviewed Sonic Mania, and, at the time, I did enjoy the game, even, during the DRM backlash. I had a blast. But, over the past few months of playing and “speedrunning,” and time attacks, I started not to enjoy the game a bit.
Each playthrough of Sonic Mania I did, started to grow sour. There are things in Mania; I do like, but, there is a lot that, I don’t want or grown to dislike. I will be writing this, the best I can and hope you can see my side of things.
What I didn’t like the most is that Sonic Mania, feels like a fan game of Sonic The Hedgehog 3, It is a mash-up of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The worst thing about Sonic Mania is that it relies heavily on nostalgia and I feel that where the game kind of falls on its ass.
If you need to use nostalgia, as a buffer for a game, it won’t be such a good idea. I like nostalgia, and when some games use it, as a call back here and there, it’s okay. But when your game is based around or on nostalgia, not to mention, that there are remasters or remakes of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD.
Let’s look at some at a stage. Stardust Speedway in Sonic Mania
Most of the level layout is new but, then, you get into the latter half of the stage, it uses set pieces and level bits from Marble Garden, in Sonic 3. But for 75 % of this zone, it is Stardust Speedway.
Look, I get it. This is the 25th anniversary of Sonic, and they want to give the fans, a brand new game. That is all fine and well. But, if the original game relies heavily on Nostalgia, It’s not a new game is it?
I mean, when fans have the ports made from the ground up of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic CD, Sonic Mania loses that charm, it once had or was going for? If we didn’t have these ports remastered of Sonic, then, Sonic Mania could get away with it.
But, if we didn’t have those ports, most likely, Mania wouldn’t be a thing now.
Sonic Generations did the same thing as Sonic Mania where it was a nostalgia trip. Again, I am not saying these games are bad. But, when you take off your Nostalgia glasses, you might not like what you will see. Sonic Mania panders to the Sonic fans, and more so, to the nostalgia sonic fans of the classic days.
When I look at Sonic Mania, it seems to be 25 % new things, four new zones, and the final zone. Seven new Special Stages and Sonic’s Drop Dash. Those are worth noting here. And there are eight old zones, Blue spheres (Yes, I am adding this here, as it adds nothing new), Mean Beans or Puyo Puyo.
From what I saw. There are 20 new bosses and six old bosses. While having new bosses is great and all. It doesn’t make up for the rest of the game.
There is more OLD, then new here. If there should be “Sonic Mania 2” They need to drop the nostalgia safety net, they need to make some new levels. Adding back an old stage or two, for Sonic Mania 2, is fine, so long, if you create the new game have nothing but more new levels, otherwise, at that point, it would be Sonic Mania DLC.
If you enjoy Sonic Mania and just don’t care, that is fine. But, playing Sonic Mania, for me, over these few months, I still think Sonic Mania is a good game. But, again, there is a lot of old and new.
Sonic Mania doesn’t know what it wants to be. Is it trying to be Sonic 2? Is it trying to be Sonic 1? Or does it want to be like, Sonic CD? Sonic Mania, is all over the place. Sonic Mania feels like an incomplete Sonic 3, that is trying to mash other elements from the other classic Sonic titles into one game. It does not work and to me, makes mania feel like an Official fan game, rather than a new Sonic game.
And the whole DRM and patching out things is not helping, but, eh. What can you do? But that’s it for me here.
Where do I begin with this one… I have played bad fan games before, but damn, this one takes the cake. But let’s get into this “gem” of a game.
Before you can play, the game will give you the option to use a control or a keyboard. It would be best to use. It is a control layout, so it does not matter what you pick.
When you first start the game, you are dropped into the level, No cutscene, just an action stage. This stage is called “Emerald Garden” It uses level pieces from the advance series.
This opening stage is all over the place, there are pits in some annoying areas, the level layout is not too bad… but zone two is very questionable. But I’m jumping the gun. For sonic, he has light blue rings as a means to use his light speed dash.
I also want to talk about sonic, in this game, he feels heavy when he jumps, his momentum feels akin to Sonic 4 momentum, if you roll while holding right or left, you gain momentum, maybe, too much. This feels awkward to get used to it.
The more I play it, the more the physics and momentum give off a Sonic 4: EP 1 vibe. It really does remind me of that game, it’s not a bad thing mind you, It feels off.
I got off track again. So, let’s see. Emerald Garden has some questionable enemy placement. Or rather, the game has very questionable enemy placement, at times is unfair. You have to take your time, should you go fast, you will end up falling into a pit or running into an enemy with almost no time to react.
But the emerald garden stage is a fairly easy level if you ignore the pits. It’s a standard platformer stage. After beating Emerald Garden, you are off to fight Eggman, this boss fight is based on the Sonic Advance 2’s, “Leaf forest” boss.
But after beating the boss, you are warped to Scuttle Town, (Yes, from Shantae), where you get a cutscene that is pretty much a plot dump. Eggman and Risky boots have teamed up and you must stop them.
Here is the main hub world for this game, After beating Emerald garden zone, which is a level and a boss. Sonic gets one more zone, for the demo to play in. And boy, this next stage for Sonic is.. I really don’t like it.
The level select hub room is based on Sonic Advance 3, where, if you complete a zone, you can come back to it later, and play it again.
Now, to get into the second zone… I can understand why Lake Feperd, said this was the worst fan game from sage2017 on his twitter.
So, zone 2 is a fire-based level, or rather, going for a fire theme for the zone.
Lava Filter… Man, this stage is ugh. Enemy placement is awful here. If you are new here, using the dash booster will boost you into an enemy. There are pits here. too many pits that make this a marble-like level.
You can go fast, but you will be punished, with cheap enemy placement and cheap deaths. You need to go slow, so you can avoid cheap deaths and cheap potshots.
Overall, this is not a fun stage, it needs work, a lot of work. I can say, without a doubt, that I truly hate this stage with a passion.
But, should you manage to beat the stage, then the final boss for Sonic, is Sky. And this boss is so easy, that it is sad. Deal with a “Hard” level, only to fight an easy boss. UGH!!!!
I know, I’m being a bit mean but, you need to be this way for games. This way, they will know what to fix or improve.
After beating Sky, You get a cutscene between the two.
Then Sonic story ends with him, talking to Knuckles and Tails, which follows up with Sonic meeting Shantae again and meeting Amy
Just DAMN. Now for Shantae.
If you played the Shantae series, you know she has a Hairwhip attack and magic powers and items. The game gets most of that right, for the most part.
Scuttle Town is our first and only level for Shantae. It’s your normal platformer stage and yes, there are pits but here, they are not too bad, it’s a good thing.
Scuttle Town, you just go right and do some platforming here or there. There is a part where you need to fall down to get to the next area.
After making your way through, you get a cutscene with Sky and Bolo, as they let you know that risky boots, is up ahead. You have a cutscene with Risky Boots, seen below.
The Sonic Vs Sky fight is the same, but Risky Boots has two patterns. Run to the left or right, or jump to the left or right. That’s it. She only has touch damage as an attack and this fight is so boring.
Once Risky boots is beaten, You get a cutscene that ends Shantae part of the demo.
I am not going to bother, playing this game any longer than I need to. Going to give my thoughts on this demo, what I liked and didn’t like.
What I liked
Most the sprite animation looks nice
I like the concept, of a crossover happening
The story needs work but could be good.
What I didn’t like and bugs
This game has too many pits
Enemy placement needs work
The homing attack is broken and need to be fixed
The Lightspeed dash rings, also need work. Pressing the action in the middle of the rings will send sonic backward
Homing attack on a spring kills momentum
Sprites tend to be off the ground or not align well
When Shantae attack in the air, she does not attack but loses momentum for a second
In Lava Filter, if you skip the level trigger (By jumping over it), that takes you to the other half of the stage, the game hard locks.
In short, this game left a bad first impression, I went in knowing what I was getting myself into, but, wow. I did not plan for this, in any way. There are some good ideas here, but there is a lot of coal, burying the diamonds and there is a lot that needs to be done.
The game goes for a Sonic advance style but the physics and momentum for Sonic feel close, to that of Sonic 4’s physics and momentum. It just needs work, is this the worst fan game? No, but it’s pretty close.
If you are making games like this, it’s best to have a team of testers to find what does or doesn’t work. So this way, you will know what needs to be fixed and improved on.
But I am done with this game. There are other characters like Sky, Knuckles, Amy. Only Tails, and Bolo are unplayable, at the moment. I like the ideas here, but they need work and time. I don’t know what game engine, that giga6152 used to make this game. But with a little work, time and effort, this could be a fun fan game.
Sup, my one viewer. Sonik is back with another post, but this time, it’s something new. More of a update post for a livestream.
So, me and some friends and strangers are going to play Pangya C, “One night stand”, as my friend has said. If everything goes as plan, there will be a stream tonight about anime golf. This will be the last pangya C stream, as I have no plans on touching this game again.
I will be streaming Pangya C with friends, for as long as I can. You can watch the stream by using the sidebar and clicking “Twitch” image. There will be laughs, and there will be anger, but mostly laughs and good times, assuming we do Voice call.
The stream should start at 6 PM or later, again, if things go as plan, there will be a stream, if not, maybe tomorrow will be the day to livestream.
Hello there, I am Sonik, but you know that by now. It’s that time again. The Sonic Amateur Gaming Expo or SAGE, for short. Where Sonic game devs or indie game devs show off their skills by making a game for SAGE.
As the Title says, I will be looking at Sonic ages and give my thoughts on it and what it did right, wrong and such.
So Sonic Ages, a Sonic fan game made in Unity engine and it does offer Xbox360 / controller support. Be warned, the game will be loud when you open it.
